Name :

Varanus exanthematicus is also called SAVANNAH MONITOR or BOSC'S monitor. French scientist Louis Bosc described it for the first time in 1792.

In Africa the animal is called komni (in Zarma) or damo (in Hausa).

Specie :

Before 1990, V. exanthematicus shared its name with the white-throated and black-throated monitor (Varanus albigularis albigularis & Varanus albigularis microstictus). They differ on many levels, so they are now separate species. The similarity contributes greatly to the disinformation and confusion about care and husbandry.
